How to find your shade

  1. 01
    Find your depth

Decide roughly where you sit, from fair to very deep, using the table below.

  2. 02
    Check your undertone

Look at your veins and which jewellery suits you, then lean towards warmer or cooler names.

  3. 03
    Swatch on the jawline

Swatch two or three shades in a line along your jaw, blend lightly and check in daylight.

  4. 04
    Pick the one that disappears

The right shade blends into both your face and your neck. If in doubt, match your neck.

  5. 05
    Wait five minutes

Some foundations change slightly as they dry. Check again before deciding.

02

Know your undertone

Cool

Pink, red or rosy tones. Veins look bluish, and silver jewellery tends to flatter you.

Warm

Golden, peachy or yellow tones. Veins look greenish, and gold jewellery tends to flatter you.

Neutral

A mix of both. Veins look blue-green, and both gold and silver suit you.

Olive

A green or grey cast that can make many foundations look too pink or too yellow. Neutral to golden shades usually work best.

Shade table

Starting points for South African skin tones, from fair to very deep. Always swatch to confirm: lighting, undertone and how a foundation dries all affect the final match.

All the shades

JU Quillage Foundation (13 shades): Porcelain, Nude, Warm Peach, Buff Beige, Sand, Warm Sun, Honey, Tan, Mocha, Truffle, Chestnut, Toffee and Ebony. Shades named Warm, Honey and Toffee lean golden.

Hydrating Skincare Foundation (6 shades): Porcelain, Nude, Buff Beige, Sand, Tan and Mocha. The lighter coverage is more forgiving if your match is not perfect.

Creamy Liquid Concealer (10 shades): Light to Dark Coffee. Choose one shade lighter than your foundation to brighten under the eyes, and your exact shade for blemishes.

Loose Setting Powder: Translucent, Cool Beige, Banana and Medium Deep. Medium Deep keeps deeper skin from looking grey or ashy.

Good to know

How do I know if I am warm or cool toned?
Check your veins in daylight: greenish suggests warm, bluish suggests cool, and a mix suggests neutral. Gold jewellery usually flatters warm skin; silver flatters cool skin.
What if I am between two PHOERA shades?
Match your neck rather than your face so the result looks seamless in photos, or choose the lighter shade and warm the face with blush or bronzer.
Which PHOERA foundation has the most shades?
The JU Quillage Foundation, with 13 shades from Porcelain to Ebony.
